Track & Field: A Fashion Reboot

It’s time to suit up, athleisure style. We’re channeling our inner (albeit a few years ago) Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, and finding our flair in matching tracksuits. Recently, celebrities have been leading the charge in bringing this trend back, even as it hasn’t been too prevalent on the runway. But matching separates has been a big deal, in all places, whether it be the boss-lady power suits or simple yoga pant and sports bra sets to sport while heading to our spin classes. We’ve grabbed our favorite runway example, courtesy of Maison Valentino, and then we’ll show you the hottest celeb sightings and how you can wear this in your everyday life, without looking like you’re headed to a high school track meet.

At Valentino’s Resort showing, the runway was dotted with luxe tracksuits made of delicious silks of emerald, pink, and yellow that sat atop cruise-ready slides bedazzled with distinguished jewels. Most attention grabbing was perhaps the most subdued yet sophisticated. Presented in teeth-cutting emerald and sporting stitched rays around the neckline fit for a sun, the matching separates were undeniably fresh. They were as far away as possible from the tacky pieces that have been seen in fast-fashion joints like H&M or Urban Outfitters. They were brilliantly layered with other pieces too, as on the pink ensemble a matching scarf was added with contrasting blue earrings. A stylish fur was added on a full-zipped top and belted pants made for the lady-on-the-go but who also values her comfort. While some may be nervous when it comes to matching sporty separates, but when you splurge for quality, that whole tacky vibe is erased.

For our celebrities, tracksuits came out in full force. Models, singers, actresses, and even reality stars were showing off their style with a variety of labels and price-points. Hailey Baldwin stepped out in head-to-toe Adidas for an event, with a sleeveless bodysuit tucked under tear-away pants and a slouchy mid-calf length coat. The blunt-chop of her hair contrasted well with the red, and this is a perfect athleisure tracksuit that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. You can do this in all black too for a more evening-inspired look, or if you’re just headed out to lunch with friends, throw on your favorite sneakers instead of heels.

Model Bella Hadid donned a comfy number courtesy of a collaboration with Champion and Kith. The grey pieces channeled the more expected sweat pant and hoodie combo, but this was anything but ordinary. Colorful logos adorned the sleeves and pant legs and she paired the look with sporty Nike sneakers.

The most luxurious look comes from Celine Dion, whose Alberta Ferretti sequined set was wonderfully contrasted with a classy white tee and a Chanel bag. While the fabric may have screamed “expensive!”, the whole look felt sophisticated yet didn’t try too hard. That’s what you should look for when putting together your look.

We have two brands to put on your radar, one a luxury brand (with an totally amazing collaboration), and the other from an up and coming brand loved by celebrities like Olivia Culpo, Emily Ratajkowski, Emily Blunt, and Gigi Hadid. First is Alexander Wang’s collaboration with Adidas. It’s been going on for a few seasons now, and each time it never ceases to be a standout. Wang runway regular Kaia Gerber stepped out in a head-to-toe look finishing the heathered grey pieces with square sunglasses and a beanie. The second brand is called Cotton Citizen. Hailing mainly from LA, the brand specializes in simplicity and high quality pieces. They separates come in a variety of colors and styles, and are the easiest to match. Check them out on Instagram and see how both they and celebrities style them (don’t worry, it’s not too hard!)

The tracksuit is getting its well-deserved update. No longer the uniform of high school track coaches or students, it now is seen on the Instagrams of some of the hottest celebs, and with regularity. Styling these pieces is neither hard not pricey, as quality options can be found on all levels of the spectrum. The outfits work well for running errands with the kids or heading out shopping with friends on a blustery fall day. They can be dressed up with heels and glittering fabrics or dressed down with graphic tees and worn-in sneakers. You decide how you want this to go. But one thing is sure – you’ll cross the line first.
