The trench coat may be considered an important classic and a lifetime closet staple but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have the power to rock the fashion industry. And that’s exactly what’s happening. What started as a hot look back in spring with designers sending out fun variations like trench dresses, color accents and even off the shoulder styles, has evolved into a continued obsession (albeit with a whole new look), for Autumn/Winter 2017-18.
Leather jackets and coats in styles from trenches to bomber jackets and traditional silhouettes are huge for A/W 17-18, but you won’t find many in standard black. This time, designers are softening the look with a color palette based on gorgeous autumn foliage hues such as burgundy and several variations of light browns. We were completely swept away when we saw the hot new leather trench coats emerge at presentations for designers such as Michael Kors Collection where he kept them lengthy, feminine and strong. Meanwhile, they sent out a discreet yet cool black calf hair leather style at the Italian fashion house, Tod’s, and a bolder option where the leather was made to look even more prominent on a traditional khaki style, reserved for details at the cuffs and collar and highlighted with white piping.
If you do opt for a full leather or leather-accented version, add even more interest with heels in a matching leather hue. For retro appeal, wear a solid colored turtleneck underneath with your favorite vintage-inspired sunglasses like a cat eye model or a round lens style. Channel the likes of an icon such as Mary Tyler Moore as you dress for the workplace in a look that’s feminine, independent and strong. For a contemporary update, style the look with a bold pair of gold or silver statement earrings with interesting details such as pearls or cutout, geometric designs. We’re loving models from jewelry brands like Catbird and Sophie Buhai.
As for date night, keep its persistently sexy connotations in mind. We have television and the movies to thank for those glances that are as if they mean to say, What is she wearing underneath? It really is ironic that such a covered up look conjures up images of the barely there… play with the concept and show off the top of a lace dress or camisole at the neckline and wear a skirt or dress that will leave the legs bare.
And while khaki is always appropriate, you can definitely branch out to try something new. Try one in caramel, burgundy, olive green or even a shocking pink. More than beautiful, the trench is the perfect transition piece too – whether as a streamlined model or in an oversized silhouette. You’ll look fab and protect yourself from the unpredictable weather we see in autumn and the periods leading in and out of the season. Wear it open or closed, with lots of layers beneath or over a light, lingerie-inspired slip dress. It really all works beautifully.
It’s no wonder the trench has been an ever-present item in the wardrobes of the most stylish Londoners and Parisians. It’s demure, elegant and an extremely quick route to upgrade your outfit to chic. Emulate the timeless icon in a more traditional design or opt for an unexpected runway twist with sleeve or shoulder variations. Yes, you can wear almost anything you want, throw a trench over it and end up looking amazing. Your toughest decision will be reaching for boots, slingback heels or a trim pair of sneakers, Cape Cod style. One word of caution… taking home an opulently lined model means you may never take it off.
