Style on the Fly: How to Look Chic while Traveling

Holiday seasons mark a time for spending quality time with family, giving gifts, and for many, traveling to visit others or to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And while the days of fancy flight-wear are most definitely a thing of the past, that doesn’t mean that your uniform for heading to the airport for a trip should be sweatpants and a hoodie. We want to show you how to mix comfort and style for all your trips – so that you can stay on top of your fashion game, even at 30,000 feet in the air.
The easiest and comfiest trend here is not sweatpants – it’s athleisure. Models and celebrities have been taking this trend everywhere, incorporating it into their wardrobes both in and out of the gym. We aren’t telling you to don your tight tank tops, running shoes, and sweatbands. But many of us wear yoga pants out and about in our daily lives, and you can incorporate them in your airport style with ease. Pull on a comfy graphic tee and knot it in the front for a stylish twist, or wear a slouchy sweater (maybe even a little cropped?) to keep you warm on your journey. Tracksuits have been all the rage among high-fashion runways, like DKNY’s. Model Cara Delevingne worked a plum velour tracksuit and a basic white tee with sneakers. Even just grabbing one piece from a matching set can be an easy way to stay comfortable yet fashionable on your flights. And for shoes, sneakers are your best bet – they’re comfortable, casual, and they go with pretty much everything.

Big, fluffy, and fuzzy outerwear is your friend. Planes and airports tend to be chilly, so you don’t want to be caught shivering at any time. Find a piece that can be layered over a lot of outfits and will keep you warm on the go. Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Alexa Chung both went the furry and fuzzy route, and each layered their coat over pants and a tee. The brown teddy-bear coat is larger, but is a sure bet to keep you cozy. For a little more understated look, go for Chung’s white coat, which she put on top of some stretchy jeans and a casual graphic tee. If you aren’t into these fuzzy coats, go for a classic bomber. Rihanna exemplifies this perfectly with her navy blue bomber, which she paired over a hoodie and track pants. It’s a great blend of altheisure and street wear that can be finished with your favorite sneakers and accessories.

If you need to touch down at your destination looking business ready, we’ve got some cues for you too. Go for lightweight, breathable fabrics, but don’t shy away from adding a pop of color if you want to. Miranda Kerr wore a sparkling green top with a classic Gucci belt and a large black coat draped stylishly over her shoulders. Amal Clooney wore bold colors, but elevated the look with the matching skirt and blazer. The set was simple but elegant and sophisticated. For the business casual, we suggest that a blazer will be your best friend here. If you want to stick with jeans for the bottoms, a dressier top can be layered with a tailored blazer for a professional look. If heels are a must, go for some kitten heels or chunky block heels to ensure more comfort than pain.

Just because you’re traveling thousands of miles across the country (or the globe!) doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your style for comfort. You can have both, and we know we can prove it. Celebs and models, along with a few runway looks serve good inspiration for airport style and travel-wear. Pieces like bomber jackets, fuzzy coats, and graphic tees can become your uniform for travel days, and you can maintain your unique style with only a little extra effort.
