You love your athleisure - now it’s time to dress it up. It’s a fun contrast because athleisure keeps things really practical and cozy while adding dressier pieces to the mix maintains your love for fashion and emphasizes your femininity. Here are all the tips you need to take your sporty staples to refreshing new heights.
Athleisure Goes Couture
Giambattista Valli created serious waves with the Fall/Winter 2017 runway presentation with athleisure styled with couture- dramatically ruffled couture blouses styled with black leggings by Nike (both high waisted and regular models). It confused a lot of the attendees because they assumed he joined the ranks of other high fashion designers doing athletic brand collaborations but it was actually just a styling decision made specifically for the presentation.
Valli explained they were realistic combinations, representing the modern woman wearing her leggings around the city as she multi-tasks but wants to continue to look chic. We love how they were styled with sexy high heeled booties and shapely jackets. They make it really easy to transform your athleisure separates.
Make It Fun
Wear a pair of finer, luxurious sweatpants with sneakers (Stan Smiths can do the job), a silk tank top and heels. Feel free to toss a leather jacket over the look for a chilly night.
Have a great time mixing colors and throwing in random patterns and extra textures (we’ve even seen feathers).
Wear black, high cut athleisure shorts with a colorful printed button down and Mary Janes or block heels.
Choose Secret Gym Clothes
For those of you wanting less literal gym clothes, some athleisure is being designed to be undercover athletic wear and a lot more fashion-conscious. Basically anyone at first glance would be unable to tell that they’ve been designed to support your workout sessions.
Opt to wear cropped black athletic pants with a sophisticated shell top and timeless pumps like the styling direction at Dior’s Spring/Summer 2017 show. Or, go the Versace-inspired route with a high glam tracksuit with sporty, strappy heels and statement sunglasses.
Athleisure is showing up in sexier and sexier iterations with increasingly versatile fabrics so we have a lot of support to get from the gym to cocktail hour. Think of it as an interesting compromise, designers couldn’t get us out of our leggings, so they’ve shown us how we can elevate the look to a whole new level of style. Call it the best of both worlds...
