Belts are something often left behind, or simply treated as a frustrating necessity to some ill-fitting jeans or pants that you’re too lazy to find a replacement for. But that is changing – big time. Statement belts are making a strong comeback, being heralded as the “cherry on top of your fashion sundaes” by it-girls and designers alike. With the ability to draw in the waist for an hourglass shape or take your favorite dress to the next level, belts are an underutilized weapon in your arsenal.
The Logo-mania trend has heavily influenced the rise of statement belts, and the hottest ticket item might be the ‘double-G’ Gucci belts being worn by celebs and the public alike. In both thick and thin styles, women are throwing them on with their favorite jeans and shorts, while also cinching in their fancier dresses and eveningwear looks. Even with a price tag of almost $500, they’re still being snatched up faster than ever. The best thing about these belts is that they are easy to wear with everyday looks and are simple and classy (not to mention it’s Gucci, so that’s got to count for something, right?). We suggest a little creativity with this belt though. Try pulling it on over a blazer at your waistline, instead of simply looping it through the straps on your pants. Or pair it with a slip dress that is finished with a oversized denim jacket. The possibilities are endless.

The other big logo belt is that of Off-White and their famously yellow industrial belt. First seen on the menswear show back in 2016, this belt (and brand) has taken the fashion world by storm. Designer Virgil Abloh created an accessory that is incredibly versatile and also a total symbol of one’s finger on the fashion world’s pulse. While some may shy away from the brightness of the color, never fear – it comes in a variety of colors, including black and white. The length of this piece is also unique: the extra fabric allows the wearer to play with how it hangs. It can be knotted around the waist to prevent drag, or can loop down towards your shoes in a clear show of its namesake. Like the Gucci Belt, this one is a great piece to dress up a suit, or goes wonderfully over a lace dress.

Kenzo presents one of the simplest, but still relevant takes on the trend. They play on the power of stark contrasts, and use neutrals to their advantage among bright and bold colors. The Parisian brand sent looks down the runway that featured thick stripes mixed with brilliant florals, racing emblems given the ruffle treatment and structured suits bearing frills and hefty jewels. Yet each of these looks was finished wonderfully with thin, unadorned belts. Textured tops and slouchy trousers were given stark white belts, ones that make the outfit more cohesive and less like someone had spilled a bucket of paint all over the model. Sleeveless blazers that stood next to candy-colored stripes were given the same treatment, bringing it all together with a thin white belt. You can do the same! This isn’t to say you need only wear this with bright colors, but rather note the fact that the belts finished the outfit and stepped it up another level. That’s the power of a good belt.

Belts have the ability to do a lot of things. They can give us that desired ‘hourglass’ shape. They can add a pop of color or shine to an outfit. And they can tailor a look to fit any occasion. Both Logo-driven, and clean, sophisticated belts are both welcome additions to any closet. The Logo-mania trend is here to stay, and a simple yet chic belt can elevate outfits for the workplace as well as for everyday events. Versatility is key, and this has got it.
